1. Don't spend all your time scanning pages and pages of job search engine after job search engine (although I have to admit I did this every once in a while).
2. CareerBuilder and other Job search sites usually have advanced search options or the ability to make the same search daily by saving a custom search. It can save you lots of time because besides specifying criteria like "within 15 miles of zip code" you can ALSO EXCLUDE certain companies. This is important because once you start identifying all the scams and other companies you're not interested in, you can include them in a list of who to EXCULDE in your search results. You will be amazed at how this shortens your list of possibilities.
3. On certain days spend time updating your reference letters. I had some letters but they were from 2004 so most agencies and employer's would ask for current letters of recommendation.
4. Spend a day to verify your own past employment and address information. This can be a snafu because if your information is incorrect some employers will set your application aside. Call your past employers and ask for human resources. Simply state that you previously worked there and you need to verify your exact dates of employment.
5. Make sure you have correct address information for your place of residence for the last 7 years.
6. Spend time speaking with contacts who can be Management / Supervisor References over the phone or email. Most applications will ask for three management references and three co-worker references with phone numbers and emails. I had one opportunity that I missed because my references did not return the agencies calls.
7. Keep in contact with past co-workers via email, LinkedIn.com, and maybe Facebook (Sometimes it's best to keep Facebook separate from job search). I did however connect with friends on facebook and then got their linkedin.com info to connect with them there. Sometimes LinkedIn.com can be good and sometimes it can be bad. It depends on the client. It can lock you into a certain mold. You need to be flexible at times, which is why I started updating my resume on Careerbuilder about every week or every other week.
8. If you have certifications, make sure to note the date it was given and the date it expires (or if it never expires). I had to call on one of my certifications to get this info accurate.
9. Don't list your address on your resume. Only list your city and state and zip, phone, and email. Applications are different because their private.
10. Go to job agencies that specialize in your field of work. One day last year I decided to scan Careerbuilder for jobs I would love to have and see who was offering them. It turned out to be in Diamond Bar, CA. So the next day I dressed up and drove over to that building and discovered they were on the 3rd floor. I walked into their office without an appointment and asked if I could speak with a recruiter about possibly registering with their agency. It turned out I was able to speak briefly with a recruiter that day, but even if they were busy and I couldn't have spoken with anyone, I was happy to get out of the house and hit the street. Long story short, that recruiter ended up getting me three interviews at a certain company over this last year and she never gave up on me until I now have landed a job at that company through that agency! There is nothing like making your presence known to others. If they can connect a face to the voice over the phone, then the connection is stronger and more meaningful.

I miss the days ... I miss the days where you could walk up to a place you were interested in applying to, and speak to a hiring manager. I miss the days where you could do follow up and actually get a call back regarding the status of your application. Everything is so DEPERSONALIZED. They call themselves Human Resources but they don't want to talk to you. Im glad you found a? job, man. Career Builder did s**t for me.
